Dream Theater - Images and Words and personal thoughts based on it...

Χθες συμπληρώθηκε ένας χρόνος από το πρώτο post μου σ'αυτό το blog. Αμφιβάλλω κατά πόσο ενδιαφέρει αυτό, αλλά με την ευκαιρία αυτή πήρα την απόφαση να κάνω ό,τι και σ'εκείνο το post. Σήμερα λοιπόν, η γνώμη μου για ένα άλλο αγαπημένο album, το Images and Words των Dream Theater (προλαβαίνετε ακόμα να σταματήσετε να διαβάζετε). Ας ξεκινήσουμε από τα βασικά. Η μπάντα δημιουργήθηκε το 1986 όταν οι John Petrucci (κιθάρα) και John Myung (μπάσο) συνάντησαν σ'ένα χώρο προβών του πανεπιστημίου Berklee τον drummer Mike Portnoy. Αμέσως άρχισαν να παίζουν μαζί, ενώ οι "Γιάννηδες" της μπάντας τηλεφώνησαν σ'ένα φίλο τους πληκτρά στη Νέα Υόρκη (Kevin Moore). Μαζί, άρχισαν να γράφουν κομμάτια ορχηστρικά, ψάχνοντας για τραγουδιστή. Μετά από αρκετές προσπάθειες, καταλήγουν αρχικά στον Chris Collins (όπως λέει ο Petrucci παλιός φίλος τους από τη Νέα Υόρκη) και στη συνέχεια στον Charlie Dominici, με τον οποίο ηχογραφούν και το πρώτο album τους. Παρόλα αυτά, ούτε ο Dominici ήταν κατάλληλος για τη μουσική που ήθελαν. Μετά από αυτόν, η μπάντα έκανε κάποιες εμφανίσεις παίζοντας ορχηστρικά και πέρασε από audition περίπου 200 άτομα μέχρι να τους στείλει μια κασέτα ο James LaBrie. Η μπάντα τον δοκίμασε και από τότε είναι ο μόνιμος τραγουδιστής. Επιστρέφοντας στο αρχικό θέμα, το album αυτό κυκλοφόρησε εν έτει 1992. Είναι το δεύτερο album της μπάντας, πρώτο με τη νέα σύνθεση και αποτελείται από 8 κομμάτια. Ας τα πάρουμε με τη σειρά: Το album ξεκινάει με το Pull me Under, μέχρι σήμερα το πιο επιτυχημένο κομμάτι της μπάντας και το μόνο Top 10 hit που έχουν (#10 on the Billboard Magazine Mainstream Rock Tracks). Οι στίχοι του είναι βασισμένοι στην τραγωδία Hamlet του Shakespear, ενώ το απότομο τελείωμά του αποτελεί αναφορά στο Abbey Road των Beatles που τελειώνει με παρόμοιο τρόπο. Το Another Day ήταν το πρώτο κομμάτι που προοριζόταν για single και συμμετέχει ο Jay Beckenstein, σαξοφωνίστας των Spyro Gyra και ιδιοκτήτης των BearTrack Studios, στα οποία ηχογραφήθηκε το album. Το Take the Time αποτελεί μια καταγραφή των όσων συνέβησαν μεταξύ των 2 αυτών album και είναι το μοναδικό κομμάτι που γράφτηκε εξ ολοκλήρου (μουσική και στίχοι) από όλα τα μέλη της μπάντας, ενώ το ιταλικό sample στη μέση περίπου του κομματιού είναι παρμένο από το Cinema Paradiso και σημαίνει "τώρα που είμαι τυφλός, βλέπω καλύτερα". Το Surrounded σχετίζεται με την πνευματική διαφώτιση κι έχει αφιερωθεί από τη μπάντα σ'ένα τενίστα που έχασε τη ζωή του από το AIDS (Arthur Ashe). Το Metropolis είναι ένα επικό κομμάτι, δεύτερο πιο δημοφιλές του δίσκου και ίσως το πιο χαρακτηριστικό Dream Theater κομμάτι, βασισμένο σε μια ιστορία του John Petrucci που αναπτύχθηκε αργότερα στο album Scenes from a memory, το κατά πολλούς κορυφαίο τους δίσκο. Το Under a Glass Moon έχει πιο ελεύθερους στίχους, που σχετίζονται με την ευχαρίστηση, ενώ το solo του Petrucci είναι εκπληκτικό και θεωρείται από πολλούς ένα από τα καλύτερά του. Το Wait for Sleep είναι η μπαλάντα του δίσκου, γραμμένο από τον Kevin Moore, ενώ το Learning to Live που ακολοθεί και κλείνει το δίσκο αναφέρεται στο AIDS. Τα κομμάτια στο δίσκο είναι σε στίχους των Petrucci και Moore, εκτός από το Take the Time και το Learning to Live (Myung). Όσο αφορά τις προσωπικές μου σκέψεις, θα έλεγα ότι απλά κάθε φορά που ακούω αυτό το album αφήνομαι στη μελωδία και στο λυρισμό που κυριαρχεί, ενώ μέσα από τους στίχους αναγνωρίζω καταστάσεις και τελικά επιτυγχάνω μια μορφή ηρεμίας και κάθαρσης, πέρα από τις φορές που μένω με ανοιχτό το στόμα (ακόμα και τώρα μετά από τόσες φορές) από την έμπνευση και την τεχνική που υπάρχει σ'αυτά τα 8 κομμάτια. Η προσωπική πρόταση είναι και πάλι πολύ δύσκολη, αλλά είναι το Metropolis, απλά γιατί είναι ό,τι πιο αντιπροσωπευτικό του ήχου και της ιδιοσυγκρασίας της μπάντας που ονομάζεται Dream Theater.

Τώρα τελευταία ξέθαψα πάλι αυτό το album. Επιλέγω αυτό γιατί είναι πολύ ατμοσφαιρικό και ένα από τα πιο αγαπημένα μου τραγούδια από τους Φινλανδούς.

Επιστροφή από τις διακοπές του Πάσχα (χρόνια πολλά και τα σχετικά...) μ'ένα κομμάτι που θεωρώ ότι άργησα πολύ να βάλω. Το κομμάτι είναι απλά μαγικό και δεν θα το χαλάσω με λόγια. Να πω απλά ότι το δεύτερο βίντεο τραβήχτηκε από εμένα στη live εμφάνισή τους στη Θεσσαλονίκη το 2007 και είναι από το προσωπικό μου profile στο Myspace.
